Get Guernsey is now live and ready for listings

April 14, 2010 |  by  |

Local is best! Do you know where to get a local turkey for Christmas? Local pork? and vegetables? What about services from local companies?

Get Guernsey has come to life as a result of Dave Gorvel identifying that it is not always easy to find out where to get local produce and services. As a strong advocate of everything local, Dave has given birth to a website that aims to be the one-stop-shop for finding local produce and services in Guernsey.

There are two perspectives to Get Guernsey: consumer and supplier.

Why should I use Get Guernsey as a consumer?

  • Get Guernsey will be a fantastic resource where you can find out who supplies what in Guernsey, allowing you to support local industry.
  • If it is food you are after, local produce is fresh and tasty. You will be surprised at what is available once you browse the categories.
  • Finding local suppliers of almost any service means they have local knowledge on their side.
  • Supporting Island enterprises will ensure that these providers will be around to continue to provide their excellent products to us in the future.

Why join and list your product or service if you are a supplier?

  • The driving force behind Get Guernsey is to be able to pool resources so that advertising and exposure can be achieved as a collective – i.e. using money collected in year 2 to advertise and increase traffic through the site. That will in turn increase business for participating members.
  • This brings great value for every pound spent.

Free for the first year.
As it is still in phase 1 (the building phase), Get Guernsey is canvassing for people and businesses to join the website as a simple listing with phone number, or a more extensive listing with more information. Please see www.getguernsey.com for further details. After the first year there will be annual fees for certain listings. Compared to the costs of advertising individually the annual fees will be negligible.

Starting a service of this kind always has a bit of a ‘chicken and egg’ flavour to it. Step one (in year 1) is getting people to list themselves on the website so that there is a comprehensive range of services available. Step two (in year 2) is to start pushing the Get Guernsey service out to prospective customers when it is a well-populated and valuable service.
